Adults grow into 10-15mm shiny black beetles. The males have a thickend tarsus on the front leg to help them burrow.

Relatively inactive in winter. Eggs hatch into 1st instar and larvae develop through 3 stages. 1st instar feeds on decaying organic matter, 2nd instar feed on plants and roots, 3rd instar are fully grown larvae. Control is difficult once 3rd instar is reached, best to target 1st and 2nd stage.
